History
Bata Maples Sugarbush was established in 2010 in Quinte West, Ontario. We are located on Bata Road, just minutes north of the 401, about an hour and a half east of Toronto.
Bata Maples Sugarbush can be found on 75 rolling acres in Quinte West, Ontario. The actual maple bush is located on the crest of the hills on the property, making it ideal for pipelining the sap down to the valley to the sugar shack. In the spring of 2010 four hundred and twenty taps were installed on a gravity fed pipeline system and it is the plan to expand the operation each year for the next five years.
Bata Maples Sugarbush is owned and operated by Frank Haveman, a retired teacher of 32 years. Sugaring has been a passion of Frank's since he was a teenager, when he first tapped some trees on his parents' farm, which is adjacent to their current acreage. In 1979 he built a sap shack in the woods on the family farm and for several years he managed 300 taps, of which 200 were on a gravity fed pipeline system and 100 were on buckets. He then moved to Lahr, West Germany, to teach at a DND school for four years. When he and his wife returned to Canada they built a log home on the property and Frank returned to his love of sugaring. As their four children were growing up Frank tapped trees on a small scale and boiled down on the kitchen stove or in an open pan outdoors. In the fall of 2009 he and his brother moved the original sap shack to its present location near the family home.
